The Richard Wright Public Charter School for Journalism and Media Arts (770 M St SE) presents the Seventh Annual Black-Tie Gala at the University of the District of Columbia (4200 Connecticut Ave NW). Taking place Friday June 8 from 5:30 to 10 p.m., this red-carpet, black tie affair is an enticing evening of the arts with jazzy, hip-hop, R&B and soulful musical performances; brilliant, student-produced, short films from ROXIE Film Productions; an awards ceremony of notable Honorees: an elegant sit down dinner; a colorful silent auction and so much more!
This year’s festivities will be hosted by three-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Raheem Devaughn. With his deeply reflective, soulful insight the movement continues in his music and his messages.
Gala 2018 also features the dynamic musical talents of another Grammy-nominated artist Maimouna Youssef or Mumu Fresh, who was recently highlighted on NPR’s Little Desk together with Common and August Greene.
It’s been a monumental year of challenge and change, but what continues to bear witness to the truth in history is the power of young people to create real change. They are the hope for the future. With meaningful educational opportunities, they will make a lasting, positive impact in the world. The Richard Wright students are change agents and content creators making a lasting impression with their powerful short films, many of which will be featured at the gala. Created in various genres, these films express and provoke a range of emotions within all of us and are relatable yet fresh in their perspective.
The Richard Wright Black Tie Gala 2018 is the biggest fundraiser of the year for this public charter school that is ‘Rewriting the Future, One Student at a Time.’
Engaging attendees, notable honorees, delicious food, creative films, sizzling music, beautiful art, cutting edge fashion and dance choreography, and a cash bar! The Seventh Annual Richard Wright PCS Black-Tie Gala will truly be an evening to remember, worth the time and investment in one of the most prolific and innovative schools in DC.
