The 800 block of H Street NE was closed to traffic between about 10 p.m. Saturday night and 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning as police investigated a shooting.

At about 9:26 p.m. Saturday night, Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers responded to reports of a burglary on the 800 block of Eighth Street, near the intersection with H Street NE, where they found a man standing in the street with a gun.

A press release from MPD said that officers ordered the man to drop the weapon. The man pointed it at officers instead. Officers fired their own guns, hitting the suspect.

Officers then gave the suspect first aid until DC Fire and EMS arrived. The man was transported to an area hospital for treatment where he is in critical condition.

The weapon was recovered at the scene and is pictured above. Once they had a chance to closely examine it, it was determined that it was actually a BB gun.

Early reports indicated that the police were investigating a report of a domestic incident. MPD has since clarified that the report was of a Burglary One, a burglary under progress while someone, usually the resident, was present in the home.

No pedestrians or officers were injured during the incident. The MPD officers were placed on administrative leave, as per MPD policy. They had activated their Body Worn Cameras, and that footage is currently under review, MPD said.

The 34-year-old Northeast man was arrested and charged with Assault on a Police Officer while armed.

The case is still under investigation. Anyone with information or who was a witness is asked to contact police at (202) 727-9099.
